It’s that time of year again, where we take some time to share the voices of underrepresented people in cybersecurity. The hope, of course, is that minorities in cybersecurity are heard as often as everyone else’s — but we’re not there yet. So until then, I am happy to be an ally to this important movement. With that in mind, meet the fascinating Dorothy Eves…

What kind of security do you do?

I work in the Cyber Intelligence space. I spend majority of my time doing OSINT work, keeping up to date with security news and sharing/gathering intel. Keeping track of APTs and TTPs and involved in threat and strategic intelligence.

Why did you decide to move to security in the first place, and how did you make the move?

I wanted to move into security after making a transition from pharmacy into IT. I worked at an online pharmacy doing IT work like onboarding new employees accounts, working the help desk, understanding employee help desk inquiries and translating that into technical terms for the software engineers. I spent time translating technical terms to the average user and visa versa. I gained a lot of risk analysis skillsets due to having to troubleshoot various issues on the fly. I enjoyed being able to challenge myself to solve tasks I’ve never faced before. During this time, I went back to school and landed a Co-op in Cyber Intelligence. It was here I saw security as a career move for me. All of the skills I utilized working in IT applied in security. I interviewed for a full time role and been working in this space since.

What do you like about working in security?

No day is ever the same in security. There are always new challenges we face and work to try and solve and I enjoy being able to use my researching and investigative skillsets. Security allows me to constantly be able to learn new things which is what I enjoy the most.

Who inspires you in your security work?

Twitter Cybersecurity community. They’re always sharing resources and it’s great learning from them. I find many security professionals are down to earth and willing to share knowledge. Seeing people’s successes and skillsets inspire me to learn as much as a I can, apply it, and grow in my expertise.

What do you hope to do with your security career?

I hope to contribute to the security field in more ways. I want to encourage others who have an interest in security, that they too can have a career in this field. I want to educate people about Cybersecurity risks and I have been thinking about starting a vlog to do so.

I definitely want to grow in my career and expand my knowledge in other domains.

What is your hope for the security industry?

In general, I hope the security industry will continue to welcome new people in from various diverse backgrounds and see more opportunity for entry level. I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to show what I can do even without much ‘official’ previous experience. I see more of that now, and I hope we continue to attract great talent and increase diversity.
